A few years ago, I undertook the challenge of walking the Cotswold Way, a 104 mile cross country walk. This walk, was not for the faint hearted. A variety of different terrains and more hills than I care to recollect. Some so steep I wondered if it was even possible to conquer them. It was however, a personal challenge which I felt very proud of at the end of each day. I walked alongside friends and we completed the walk in just 10 days. On the seventh day, we stumbled upon Tyndale Monument.
Tyndale monument in North Nibley (Gloucestershire) was erected in 1866. It’s 111 feet high and to reach the top, you must ascend up 120 steps. 120 very steep steps, up a circular staircase with no handrail. The climb made us all dizzy but it had to be done.
The monument was built in memory of William Tyndale, a Dursley man who translated the bible into English, before being strangled and burnt for his “crime”.
The view from the top of Tyndale Monument is a 360 degree panorama of Gloucestershire countryside. Berkeley Vale, the River Severn and the Black Mountains are just some of the sights on the horizon. There is no charge to enter the tower, but a list of suggested donations can be found at the bottom. The gate is unlocked 24/7 so ramblers are able to go up and admire the view whenever they like.
My photos just don’t do the views justice, but they really were spectacular.
